Betty Sue Caldwell Vaughan , age 93, passed away on September 1, 2021 at Mount Royal Towers in Birmingham, Alabama. Betty was born on August 28, 1928 to Myra English Caldwell and James Clyde Caldwell. She grew up in Samson, Alabama and attended Alabama College for Women (University of Montevallo). In 1949, Betty Caldwell married Oscar Vaughan, Jr. and moved to Elba, Alabama where she resided for the next 64 years. While being a devoted wife for 59 years and raising their three children in a happy and loving home, Betty also became an integral and valuable member of the Elba community. In addition to being actively involved in her children's schooling and numerous activities, she was also an active member of the Azalea Garden Club, the Twentieth Century Study Club, and her sewing group. Betty was a devoted member of the Elba United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Zuripha Dunnaway Sunday School Class, on the Special Persons committee, and always willing to be of service anywhere there was a need. Betty was the consummate hostess and enjoyed entertaining and cooking for family and friends, both at home and at their beach home where many memories were made. In addition to cooking, she enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, and French hand sewing and smocking beautiful dresses and outfits for her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband Oscar Vaughan, Jr., Betty is pre-deceased by her daughter Carol Vaughan Kendrick and her brother Charles G. Caldwell. She is survived by her sister Jackie Caldwell Wilson of Samson, Alabama, her brother James R. Caldwell of Bay Minette, Alabama, her son Murry Caldwell Vaughan (Ann), her daughter Vicki Vaughan McGehee (Charles) all of Birmingham, Alabama; her grandchildren Kelle Kendrick Masters (Dayne) of Austin, Texas, John Frank Kendrick, III of Tyler, Texas, Elizabeth McGehee Culpepper (Trey) of Selma, Alabama, Emily Vaughan Tripp (Heath) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Charlotte Vaughan McGehee of Birmingham, Alabama, and Murry Caldwell Vaughan, Jr. of Asheville, North Carolina; her great grandchildren Addison, Haynes, and Mills Masters, Ford and Annie Culpepper, and Win, Wells, Sellers, and Collier Tripp.
There will be a celebration of Betty's life on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, 11:00 AM at Elba United Methodist Church with Min. Steve Reneau officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:00a.m. at Elba United Methodist Church. Graveside services immediately following at Evergreen Cemetery.
Should remembrances be preferred in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Elba United Methodist Church (503 Davis Street, Elba, AL. 36323) or to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (322 English Avenue, 16 th Floor, New York, NY 10001).
