Dawson was born at home in rural Coffee County on December 8, 1940, the oldest of four children of Eugene and Ollie Belle Farris. At a young age, he became a member of New Haven Baptist Church where he remained active until his health declined. He attended Damascus School and later graduated from Elba High School. Dawson then attended Massey-Droughan Business College in Montgomery where he met Jeanette Johnson of Tuskegee and later married her. Dawson and Jeanette had two children, Denise and Michele, affectionately called Kitty and Trick, as everyone had to have a nickname.
Dawson's love of home and the farm drew him back to County Road 410 where Jeanette later succumbed to cancer.
God provided Dawson a second wife and helpmate, Frankie Donaldson Oglesby. As a bonus, he was blessed with two precious children, Jan and Greg. Jason was born to Dawson and Frankie in 1976.
Dawson Farris was a natural farmer and entrepreneur. Whether riding through the pasture on his Gator, looking for a new calf, moving an irrigation system, or planting an innovative crop of hemp, his happiest hours were in nature.
If you fish in Coffee County, you are probably at a pond Dawson cored, from Coffee Lake to Gateway Estates. He and the boys built chicken house pads from Eulaula to the Florida line. Another passion was running his sawmill from which he supplied wood now found in Michele's, Jason's and Greg's houses.
Dawson and Frankie took great pride and pleasure in their poultry operation. Both being perfectionists, they received many awards such as Top Broiler Producer several years and Outstanding Conservation Business Award.
Dawson will be greatly missed by family and friends.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to caregivers, Lucy Watkins, Leslie Flowers, and Betty Homyak.
