Fred Wilks
Moore
Sep 17, 1925 — Oct 18, 2025
CSM, RET. Fred W. Moore passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at the amazing age of 100 years, one month and one day old.
Fred was the seventh of nine children of Robert H. Moore and Allie Mae Wilks Moore. He was a member of Elba First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and in various other capacities.
One of Fred's greatest hobbies was fishing. He also enjoyed boating, and he purchased a pontoon fishing boat at the age of 94. His favorite foods were oysters, buttermilk, cornbread, turnips, and tomatoes!
Christmas would always find Fred surrounded by gifts. It was his favorite time of the year. He was so generous to everyone, and he loved to tease his grands with the presents.
Fred was very proud of his military service, which began at the age of 19, when he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He shared the episode of having his appendix removed under a palm tree while stationed in Guam.
After the end of WWII, Fred returned to Elba and married Jean Daniels Moore in 1946. He worked at various jobs and joined the Army National Guard. While with the Guard, he rose in rank to Command Sergeant Major. During this time, he changed from the National Guard to the Army Reserves.
Fred helped establish a Reserve Unit in Elba and served as the unit's Command Sergeant Major until his retirement in 1984.
Upon retiring, Fred established a dirt and excavating business.
In 1988, he entered the political world when he was elected Mayor of Elba. During his tenure, the devastating flood of 1990 destroyed much of downtown Elba.
Fred was known as a person who never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. It was amazing to watch him at his 100th birthday celebration to be able to recall so many people's faces, even those he had not seen for many years. It was a blessing to hear so many people relate what an inspiration he had in shaping their life.
He was honored to receive the "Fred Moore Day" Proclamation and the Governor's Proclamation during the 100th Birthday Celebration. He enjoyed his friends, family and community during this special event, which celebrated the highlights of his life. It was the best ending for a life well-lived!
Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. at Elba First Baptist Church. Funeral services with Full Military Honors will follow beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Elba First Baptist Church. Hayes Funeral Home of Elba will direct the services.
