George L. Herring, a native of Opp, Alabama, passed away in Corbin, Kentucky, on June 4, 2025, at the age of 95. He was the beloved son of Jim and Sarah Lloyd Herring. George was an outstanding athlete and student leader at Opp High School and pursued higher education at Southern Methodist University, Freed-Hardeman University, and Amridge University.
He dedicated 57 years of his life to preaching in Elba and Andalusia, Alabama, and for the Catoma Street Church of Christ in Montgomery, Alabama, where he also served as an elder. George was a respected member of the faculty at Amridge University in Montgomery for 40 years, known for his engaging Greek classes.
George married Nina English of Elba on September 21, 1953, and they celebrated their 71st anniversary together. He was cherished for his exemplary life, Biblical knowledge, and edifying preaching and teaching.
George is survived by his loving wife, Nina English Herring; his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Gina Herring Hicks and Dr. Bruce Hicks; his sisters, Joyce Norvell and Jeanie Jones; and four nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a brother.
A graveside service and burial will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Elba, Alabama, on June 9 at 3:00, with Raymond Elliott officiating and Hayes Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
