Obituary

Michele Stephens, age 66, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026.

Born in Houston, Texas, Michele later made her home in Alabama, where she devoted 28 years of her life to caring for others as a nurse. Throughout her long and compassionate career, she served at Flowers Hospital, in hospice care, and later in home health before retiring approximately six years ago. For Michele, caring for others was never just a profession—it was the very essence of who she was.

Michele was the sweetest of souls, loving with her whole heart. Her smile could light up any room, and those who knew her understood immediately that she was someone truly special. She was incredibly smart, endlessly curious, and could talk for hours about the most random topics. She loved music, and she found peace and beauty in the moon and stars, often pausing to appreciate the quiet wonder of the nighttime sky.

Above all else, Michele loved her family. Her children and grandchildren were her world. She was a fiercely protective mother and grandmother—stubborn and hardheaded when it came to herself, but endlessly giving when it came to the people she loved. Whether she was cooking dinner, cleaning the house, helping with the kids, or simply being present, Michele never hesitated to step in when her family needed her.

Her love extended far beyond her immediate family. Michele had a remarkable way of making everyone feel like they belonged. Her children’s friends were welcomed as her own, and she loved their children just as fiercely as she loved her grandchildren. She loved all of her babies, and there was always room for one more at Michele’s table and in her heart.

She taught her family some of life’s most important lessons: that you can become anything you set your mind to; that kindness given freely always finds its way back; and that you never truly know what someone else may be facing, so patience and compassion should always be your first choice.

Michele is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Hill (Jonathan Shelley); her son, Michael Champion (Jessica); and her beloved grandchildren, Emerson Shelley, Tucker Shelley, Mavery Shelley, Kendall Bonds, Jaelynn Champion, and Madison Champion.

For the last five years of Michele’s life, her daughter Jennifer was honored to be her full‑time caregiver as Michele faced difficult health challenges. Their time together was not always easy—they fussed, they fought, they laughed, they loved—but they chose each other every single day. Through it all, their bond remained unshakable, and their love unquestioned.

Michele was the best mom God could have chosen for her children. She gave them her heart, her strength, her wisdom, and a lifetime of love. She will be missed in more ways than words can ever express, but the love she poured into the world will continue through every life she touched.

And perhaps the hardest part of saying goodbye is that Michele and her family never really said it. They always said, “I love you. See you in a little bit.”

So this isn’t goodbye, Mom. I love you. I’ll see you in a little bit.

In accordance with her wishes no formal services will be held at this time.
