Robert Leason "Bob" Russell, affectionately known as Poppa Bob, passed away at the age of 82 on March 15, 2026, in Thomaston, Georgia. Born in Elba, Alabama, Bob later made his home in Griffin, Georgia. Throughout his life, he was known for his ability to connect with people, often turning a simple hello into a captivating story. His career was as varied as his tales, beginning as a teacher, transitioning to a chemist in the textile industry, and eventually returning to teaching. He also had a mysterious chapter involving government work, which he rarely spoke about.

Bob had a deep love for American history and American Indian culture and was an unapologetic gun enthusiast. In his later years, he reflected more on faith and life's bigger questions. He cherished his family deeply, especially his wife, Sue Chancellor Russell, with whom he spent 63 wonderful years.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Russell; his children, Robert Ross (Lynne) Russell of Gainesville, GA, and Leasa Russell (Dean) Capalbo of Dallas, GA; and his grandchildren, Katie, Anthony, Nicolas, and Ava Capalbo. He is also survived by sisters-in-law who were like sisters to him: Trish Chancellor Poston, Dorothy Sanders, Mary C. Lacey, Margie Chancellor, and Sylvia Chancellor Rainey.

Funeral services will be held at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Ken Chancellor officiating. Committal services will follow in the Zion Chapel Community Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hayes Funeral Home on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Hayes Funeral Home of Elba, Alabama, is serving the Russell family.

Poppa Bob will be remembered vividly and fondly, with a chuckle and a smile, probably right in the middle of one of his stories.
