Obituary

Vernon James Rathbone age 79, of Enterprise AL, passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 14 2025 due to an automobile accident.

He was born on July 15, 1946 in Luther Michigan to the late Evelyn Briggs and Gene Rathbone. Vernon was raised in Michigan and resided there until he joined the army in 1964 where he proudly served his country for the next 22 years.

During his time in the army, Vernon served three tours in Vietnam with the 173rd airborne brigade. He was awarded the honorable Purple Heart for his selfless sacrifices during one of his tours. Some of his family's fondest memories are of him telling them countless stories of the pet monkey that he had while serving in Vietnam. Vernon was a proud veteran and was honored to have served his country.

After he retired from the army, he spent many years as a truck driver. Vernon loved being on the road and getting to travel the world.

He never missed an opportunity to spoil his kids and grandkids. He loved a good adventure and made sure to make time to do the things he enjoyed, always living life to the fullest.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his parents Evelyn Briggs and Gene Rathbone; Ex-wife and beloved friend Wanda Rathbone; daughter Debra Gentile; and great granddaughter Ally Reese Bowdoin

Vernon is survived by his daughter Lisa Deal; son Greg Bowers (Tammy); Grandkids Jay Bradshaw (Latasha), Joy Smith (Jeramy), Carrie Tevis (Mark), Adam Sutley (April), Rachel Foster, Tera Bowdoin (Alex), Gage Driskell, Eric Bowers (Mia), Emily Collier (Harrison); 22 great grandkids; and 3 great great grandkids.

Vernon's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His spontaneous personality and love for life has left an indelible mark on friends and family that will carry on for generations to come.

In accordance with his wishes, no formal services will be held. The family will gather at a later date and honor his wishes in a private setting.

May Vernon rest in eternal peace, free from any worldly troubles, and may he be remembered by his spunky and full of life personality.
