Virginia Wicker Howard passed away peacefully on May 9,2023 at the age of 92. Virginia was born in Tuscaloosa Alabama to Lester Wicker and Addie Ham Wicker in 1931. Virginia grew up Kinston, where she was valedictorian of Kinston High School in 1950.
After high school graduation, Virginia moved to Washington DC where she became a pool secretary for the FBI. Shortly thereafter, she met her husband, Robert D. Howard, they were married in 1954. Virginia and Robert moved to Michigan and started a family. Virginia and Robert had four children: Valerie, Kevin, Kelley and David. Once Valerie was old enough to watch her youngest brother, Virginia went to Michigan State University where she earned a bachelor's degree in teaching in 1971. Later, Virginia also earned a master's degrees in teaching from Oakland University in 1983.
After working as a teacher for over twenty years, where she was known for her dedication to her students and education, Virginia and Robert decided to retire back to Elba in 1994 to be near her sisters.
Virginia is survived by: Husband - Robert Dell Howard, Elba, AL, Daughter - Valerie (Mike) McGuire, Elba, AL, Daughter - Kelley Howard (Gordon) McElroy, Mohnton, PA, Son - Kevin Michael (Marian) Howard, Arley, AL, Son - David Mitchell (Cheryl) Howard, Saint Petersburg, FL, Grandchildren – Lindsay (Howard), Lauren, Nikki, Lindsay (McElroy), Kyle, Taylor, Hunter, Molly, Courtney, Sidney, Colin and Hailey and thirteen great grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her Parents Lester and Addie Ham Wicker, Sisters - Refina Grimes, Marie Antoinette Wicker Knight, and Audrey Pastine Smith, Brothers - Wilford Wicker, Wayne Wicker, Wesley Wicker, and Cecil Wicker.
Funeral services will be held the Elba United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 14,2023 at 2:00 PM with Minister Steve Reneau officiating. Committal services will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be at Hayes Funeral Home on Saturday, May 13,2023 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
